When a game hits peak popularity, it's not uncommon for it to be taken away from independent retailers in some form or another. It might be a retailer exclusive, or a publisher's attempt to spread the wealth (and power). How many should I buy?
Saltmarsh: 30 days of Tomb of Annihilation sales (because those are my terms), with a 10% bump for growth, with this total divided in half because of removal of early release (it will be sold on Amazon the same day by idiot retailers). I suspect Amazon gets half the D&D market.
Villainous Expansion: Total sales of Villainous base game, divided by three, because it's an expansion, divided in half because of early Target release by months. Everyone who cares will already have it and coming out three quarters after our huge sales push means it will be cold.
A younger me might have decided to drop Villainous entirely and avoid it, especially after we sold 50 or so copies over the holidays as one of our top picks. That's a really small number for some larger stores, but out here in the burbs, we run shallow and wide. As for Saltmarsh, I might begin slimming down my D&D overall and start banging the drum for Pathfinder 2.0, which is coming soon. That's all counter productive though, so I just pivot and move on. I certainly won't push Villainous again or most Ravensburger games, nor will I be looking to invest time in jump starting Adventurer's League, which can't seem to gain a footing. I will cultivate my indifference.
This gets to the problem of the game trade in general, without allies we have cold war enemies. Publishers want retailers to do some lifting for their product, but we have product PTSD. We're not willing to enter into new co-dependent relationship in which we're beaten in response to our love. So most retailers put minimum effort into promoting products and instead focus on well established events and reliable staples. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and tremendous love for these games to do otherwise. The key to success is a series of co-dependent relationships in which we don't get angry, we quietly pivot. But it wears you down, let me tell you.
Campaign: It is the Last Age of Homo Sapiens on Earth, a dying world long sucked dry of its essence and resources by countless millennia of generations. The few remaining Servicers continue to attempt to repair themselves and other bits of technology, while the Defenders rust and rot, allowing raiders steal away what remains of the wealth of the city. The remaining Queen has devoted all of her resources to recovering enough technology to repair the last of the Great Silver Arks, but time is running out as energy cells fail and her educated Thinkers die of old age.
Three Hexes (Hex scale is 24 miles) Location 1 (0001): Ordrung - Once a massive facility for a long forgotten military unit of the Before times, this fortress is now home to a barbaric, vicious band bent on a final victory. Their kidnap raids on Eclandria has led to the capture of many of the young children of the city now serving as slaves of the gang. Several Eclandrian rescue teams have instead supplied the thugs with updated equipment and a Servitor, which they're now using as a guardian wandering the area around the crumbling edifice. Location 2 (0201): Capcanav - Festooned with bright banners, tents and dozens of aged humans, the ancient starport also hosts several decayed hulks of spaceships - the Great Arks. The Elders hold daily meditations and rituals in worship of "Those Who Have Gone Up", believing that the long-gone travelers have become gods and will return if humanity is humble enough. The Elders are dismayed at the Eclandrian attempts to repair an Ark and are trying to raise an army to resist them. Location 3 (0102): Alexindia - The Library of Knowledge and Death is contained in a vast maze underground, full of strange flickering illusions that speak in long-lost languages, crystal discs said to contain forgotten knowledge, and strange metal cabinets full of decaying material. A cult of priests has made themselves guardians of the knowledge, believing that they must die in order to understand what is contained within the archives. On a regular basis, they commit suicide (or kill each other) and resurrect/revive the dead in order to perform a "learning".
"Three Hexes" are simple campaign starters to show that you don't need to do a lot to have interesting settings for people to play in. Feel free to use these in your game, campaign or as ways to spur on your own creativity and imagination!
I've purposefully left a lot of detail out because these are supposed to spur on your imagination! The scale is what I would use in my own world, but if something else suits you better, then go for it. I may have the features moved about on the hexes for clarity, if they don't suit you, move them!

Simplify how you manage background work with WorkManager
Today, we're happy to announce the release of Android Jetpack WorkManager 1.0 Stable. We want to thank so many of you in our dev community who have given us feedback and logged bugs along the way - we've gotten here thanks to your help!
When we looked at the top problems faced by developers, we saw that doing background processing reliably and in a battery-friendly manner was a huge challenge. This meant that periodically fetching fresh content or uploading your logs was complex. Different versions of Android provided different tools for the job, each with their own API quirks. For example, listening for network or storage availability and automatically retrying your tasks involved a lot of work.
Our answer to these challenges was WorkManager. We introduced a preview of the Android Jetpack WorkManager library at Google I/O 2018 and have since iterated on it with additional features and bug fixes thanks to your valuable input.
The goal of WorkManager is to make background operations easy for you. WorkManager takes into account constraints like battery-optimization, storage, or network availability, and it only runs its tasks when the appropriate conditions are met. It also knows when to retry or reschedule your work--even if your device or app restarts.
We believe WorkManager is a friendly, approachable API that can take care of one of the most complex parts of Android for you so you can focus on the code that makes your app unique.

When to use WorkManager
WorkManager is best suited for tasks that can be deferred, but are still expected to run even if the application or device restarts (for example, syncing data periodically with a backend service and uploading logs or analytics data).

How to use WorkManager
To get started with the WorkManager API, add the WorkManager dependency available on Google's Maven repository in Java or Kotlin to your application's build.gradle file:
Now, simply subclass a Worker and implement your background work with doWork() and enqueue it with WorkManager.

WorkManager will now take care of running your task when it detects that your device is charging and the network is available.
Why use WorkManager
Backward compatibility
WorkManager will leverage the right scheduling API under the hood: it uses JobScheduler API on Android 6.0+ (API 23+) and a combination of AlarmManager and BroadcastReceiver on previous versions.
It also seeks to ensure the best possible behavior so that it complies with system optimizations introduced in newer Android API versions to maximize battery and enforce good app behavior.
For example, WorkManager will schedule background work during the maintenance window for Android 6.0+ (API 23+) devices when the system is in Doze mode.
Reliable scheduling
With WorkManager, you can easily add constraints like network availability or charging status. Your work will run when the constraints are met and automatically retried if they fail while running. For example, if your task requires network to be available, the task will be stopped when network is no longer available and retried later.
You can also monitor work status and retrieve work result using LiveData. This allows your UI to be notified when your task is completed.
In the event that your work fails, you can control how your work is retried by configuring how backoff is handled.
WorkManager is also able to reschedule your work, using a record of your work in its local database, if an application or device restart occurs.
Control over how your work is run
We understand that each app has unique needs, and so do your tasks--even within the same app. WorkManager provides a simple yet highly flexible API surface to help configure your work and how it is run.
You can also chain your one time work requests to run in order or in parallel. If any work in the chain fails, WorkManager seeks to ensure that the remaining chain of work will not run. Read more about chaining work requests here.

In the early days of consoles, manufacturers decided it would be a good idea to have a video game character as a company mascot. Not becoming a console owner until the Playstation 2, I had assumed Nintendo's Mario and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog had always been rivals. I later discovered this was not the case and that they both made their debut in the arcade a decade apart – Mario as the protagonist in Donkey Kong in 1981, and Sonic in the racing game Rad Mobile. As an air freshener.
Later in 1991 Sonic appeared in his own right as the star of Sonic the Hedgehog, ousting Alex Kidd as the Sega mascot.By this time Mario was already established, having been the main character in several titles (including Dr Mario and three Super Mario games) and a cameo a few others (such as Punch Out!!, Tennis and Golf on the NES). Importantly, when Sonic the Hedgehog was released on the Mega Drive, Mario had yet to star in a 16-bit game.
Fittingly, Sonic theHedgehog is a platform game.Compared to the amply built, moustachioed Italian, Sonic is a lot faster and exudes an impatient attitude. Pause too long on a level and he puts his hands on his hips and taps a foot.
The manual says that the mad scientist, Dr Ivo Robotnik, is capturing innocent creatures and turning them into evil robots for whatever reason. It is up to you toreach Robotniks secret lab, defeat him and save the animals.
The game is set acrosssix zones with every zone divided into three acts. Each zone has a distinctlook and feel. Green Zone is the one that everyone knows. It contains loops, springs and several routes through. I like to zip through the stage a fast as possible whereas my wife likes to take her time and collect all the items (this is the only game she has liked on by blog thus far). Marble Zone slows things down. It is a linear stagecontaining some simple block puzzles and requires careful jumping in parts. Spring Yard Zone is fast level built like a pinball machine with lots of springs and bumpers. Labyrinth Zone is a convoluted stage with underwater sections where Sonic has to jump into large bubbles to avoid drowning. TheStar Light Zone has parts constructed like a roller coaster. Scrap Brain Zone I haven't yet had chance to play properly.

The aim of each act is to move from the far left of each level to reachthe goal at the far right. Inhabiting the levels are Robitnik's metallic minions. These can be dispatched using the Super Sonic Spin Attack which involves Sonic rolling into a ball and barrelling into enemies. It is performed by using the jump button for a high attack and the down button for a low attack. Some of the robotic animals have spikes which must be avoided. When an enemy is killed it releases the animal trapped within.
This creature can only be killed by jumping on it's head. Anywhere else and you die.
To aid Sonic there are several types of power ups dotted around including extra lives, extra rings, shields, speed boosts and temporary invincibility. Lamp postsact as checkpoints so you don't need restart the level should you lose a live. There are also rings that can be collected. Collecting 100 rings in an act rewards Sonic with an extra life. If you should get hit by an enemy while carrying rings you lose them all. The rings get scattered but you can normally collect a few before they disappear. If you get hit and have no rings you will lose a life.
Reaching the end of an act with a certain number of rings sends Sonic into a bonus screen, known as the Secret Zone. This is a spinning level where the goal is to get the Chaos Emerald. If you pick up enough rings here you can also collect another life. The manual says you must collect six Chaos Emeralds but doesn't say what they are for. I assume they are needed to complete the game.

At the end of each zone you face off against Dr Robotnik. He flies a different contraption for each zone and can be defeated by hitting him a number of times with the Super Sonic Spin Attack. Once defeated you can release all the animals from that zone.

In all, Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive is an excellent game. Thegraphics are smooth, colourful and very fast, with slick animation. The sound and music are top notch. The controls are spot on and for the most part it's your fault when you die. There are some very difficult sections and a couple of places where there are unfair deaths. The unfair deaths can be avoided once you start to memorise the levels. It also speaks volumes that of all the games I have played so far, this is the only one the Mrs Wingnut has wanted a go on. She told me used to play it when she was younger, so I let her do the gameplay video. Bless.
